Analysis of Colombia and U.S. foreign policy frequently underscore the issues of drug trafficking, guerilla warfare, and paramilitary violence that underlie Colombia’s long-standing internal armed conflict. Yet Colombia boasts a rich experience of peace initiatives involving local, regional, national, and international actors. What can we learn from these experiences that might help transform Colombia’s conflict in the future? How might our notions of Colombia and our policies change if we focus on peace and peace actors as a driving force for change?
Please join us for a discussion with contributors to a new United States Institute of Peace Press book, Colombia: Building Peace in a Time of War, edited by USIP Senior Program Officer Virginia M. Bouvier. In the volume, more than thirty experienced and emerging authors, human rights activities, and peace practitioners share their insights on the prospects for peace and analyze the vast array of peace initiatives that have emerged in Colombia in recent years. Panelists will discuss the current state of conflict and peace in Colombia, explore lessons from past peace processes, and discuss the implications of this new peace-centered approach for U.S. policy and international efforts in Colombia.
