A Comparative View of Organized Crime in Mexico, Brazil, and Colombia
To be held at:
The Washington Office on Latin America (WOLA)
1666 Connecticut Ave NW, Suite 400
on: October 10, 2008
10:30 A.M. – 12:00 P.M.
In his book Mafia & Co., Juan Carlos Garzón examines the similarities and differences between organized criminal groups in Mexico, Brazil, and Colombia, as well as the effectiveness or lack thereof of different tactics employed against these organizations. The book, made possible by the Foundation for Security and Democracy in Bogota, explores the fundamental organizational and operational changes that criminal groups have set about implementing in recent years, changes that respond to the increasing globalization of crime. He also traces the ways in which organized criminal groups have in some cases become major actors in the economic and political arenas and wield enormous influence, facts that should serve as a warning that governments, civil society, the legal community, and others must come to a greater understanding of these global actors in order to more effectively combat them.
Juan Carlos Garzón is a political scientist from the Javeriana University in Colombia. He received his Masters in Theory and Armed Conflict Resolution from Los Andes University. He has served as analyst at the Organization of American States (OAS) and the Foundation for Security and Democracy (Fundación Seguridad y Democracia), a prestigious Bogota-based think tank. Garzón is the author of numerous articles on the Colombian armed conflict and the paramilitaries.
The presentation will be in Spanish. Translation will be provided.
