Colombia: The Human Cost of Trade
Join us to hear a Colombian Zenú indigenous leader discuss the proposed US-Colombian free trade agreement and its implications for indigenous people and their lands
The Colombia Human Rights Committee and the Manuel Zapata Olivella Education Center (MZO) are proud and honored to sponsor the presentation of Darío José Mejía, who is visiting the United States representing the National Indigenous Organization of Colombia (ONIC). As a political analyst, Darío has worked extensively documenting and carrying out advocacy work related to the implications of free trade agreements on indigenous peoples and their lands in Colombia.
Hosted by the American Friends Service Committee, Amazon Watch, the Interfaith Working Groups on Trade and Investment and others groups, Darío's visit will focus on providing members of Congress the opportunity to hear directly from the Colombian indigenous community regarding the realities they face and the implications of the FTA for them. Central to Dario’s visit is evidence gathered regarding two new cases of human rights violations by the U.S.-funded Colombian military.
