Promoting Better Protection of Internally Displaced Persons

Humanitarian organizations that respond to situations of internal displacement resulting from conflict, violence, and other crises around the world often face difficult challenges and obstacles. These organizations must identify those who have been displaced and ensure that their needs for assistance and protection are met. In order to do so and also facilitate durable solutions to displacement, specific policies are necessary. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has recently supported the development of such a policy.
On February 19, the Brookings-Bern Project on Internal Displacement will host the launch of the Red Cross Movement’s Policy on Internal Displacement. Anne Zeidan, head of the Internally Displaced Persons Project for the ICRC, will present the new policy. Eric Schwartz, Assistant Secretary of State for Population, Refugees and Migration, and Senior Fellow Elizabeth Ferris, co-director of the Brookings-Bern Project on Internal Displacement, will provide comments. Andrew Solomon, deputy director of the Brookings-Bern Project on Internal Displacement, will moderate the discussion.
After the program, panelists will take audience questions.
