Metamorphosis and Crisis of Representation: The [Extreme] Case of Argentina
Presentation by: Ines Pousadela, CLAS Visiting Researcher

Intercultural Center ICC 301 McGhee Library - Georgetown University

Representation is not what it used to be anymore. Contemporary political parties seem to belong to a novel species of political creatures; political identities have become less solid, more conditional and circumstantial than in the past. A new representative regime, usually labeled as 'audience democracy', has emerged as a result. This new regime remains in a state of unstable balance. The very nature of political identities and the prevailing links between citizens and parties make it indeed less stable than its predecessors, and more prone to crises of representation. We are thus faced with two distinct new phenomena: the slow, long-term, all-encompassing process of metamorphosis of representation, and the fast, localized, disruptive process of its crisis. The recent history of Argentina provides us with clear, illuminating examples of both.
